Abstract

340,003. Guy, S. S., and Stevens, W. A. July 19, 1929. Controllers, locking; systems for continuous current motors only.-A motor 1 of a vehicle is arranged for regenerative braking when the driver removes his foot from the power pedal. In one form the controller drum 22 is arrested in the position of maximum regeneration, viz., with all the armature resistance 4 and field resistance 5 short-circuited, by a polarized member 26 engaging a catch-plate 25 associated with the drum. The member 26 is only withdrawn from the plate 25 when the motor ceases to regenerate. Modifications of this form include a polarized relay, the contacts of which control a single coil operating the member 26; a construction in which the catch is associated with the rod connecting the pedal to the drum; and a construction in which the pedal returns to the " off " position although the drum is retained in the position of maximum regeneration. In the other form, the controller drum returns to the "off" position, but a polarized relay, during the period of regeneration, completes an alternative circuit for the armature so as to avoid the resistance 4, or maintains contactors 16<x>, 16, 16<o> closed. The relay may also shortcircuit the series field winding 2. In either form, a switch may be included in circuit with the relay contacts and be operated by movement of the foot or hand brake or the reversing lever so as to interrupt the regenerative circuits. Specification 330,259, [Class 38 (iii), Electric motor control systems &c.], is referred to.
