Abstract
396,174. Control of D.C. motors. RAMSDEN, H. K., 26, Ashlands, Ashton-on- Mersev, and ASSOCIATED ELECTRICAL INDUSTRIES, Ltd., Crown House, Aldwych, London. April 22, 1932, No. 11607. Drawings to Specification. [Class 38 (iii).] In a traction system in which the shunt fields of compound-wound motors are weakened for high speed and strengthened for low speed, both for motoring and regenerative braking in series and in parallel, the change from maximum to minimum shunt field excitation, when the motor connections are about to be changed from parallel to series during regenerative braking, is effected in at least two steps, the motors remaining in parallel after the first reduction in field strength has taken place. Simultaneously with the first reduction in field strength a resistance may be introduced in series with the motor armatures. More than two stages of reduction may be used and when the motors are finally connected in series with their shunt fields fully reduced during regenerative braking, the shunt fields are again increased. The sequence of changes during motoring is the reverse of that during braking. Numerical examples of the shunt field currents are given in the Specification.
