Abstract

313,427. Hall, A. J., Gray, W. T., and Associated Electrical Industries, Ltd. March 9, 1928. Series-parallel control systems; master control systems.-Electric motors for train propulsion are arranged in a number of groups, each group having two or more motors. The motors are connected and controlled so that one or more groups are in service as required, and so that all the motors can be connected either in series or parallel, passing through series-parallel transitional stages. Means are provided for cutting-out a defective group, while leaving the series-parallel control of the remainder unaffected. Fig. 1 is a diagrammatic view of the power circuits and switches for two groups of two motors each, current being taken from an overhead wire T through alternative collectors P<1>, P<2>. The closure of two manual switches d, e leaves both motor groups ready for service while opening of one switch excludes one of the groups. Cam-operated contactors for changing the connections of the motor armatures 1, 2 and their respective fields F from full series to series-parallel, and full parallel relation during motoring and also during regenerative braking, are shown in the diagram as circles enclosing parallel lines. Electropneumatic contactors for connecting the two groups together and for varying resistances r<1>, r<2> are shown as parallel lines. A master-control scheme for effecting the operation of the contactors according to the requirements of the invention is described in detail in the Specification. The complete arrangements includes means for changing the field-strength of the motors, the provision of separate excitation for use during regenerative braking, and the provision of safety interlocking devices. Specifications 234,571, [Class 79 (iii), Motor vehicles, Arrangement &c. of parts of]; 306,726 ; 308,002, [Class 79 (iii), Motor vehicles, Arrangement &c. of parts of]; 309,290, 312,715; 312,720. 313,211, [both in Class 38 (iv), Electric supply and transmission systems &c.] ; 313,665; and 314,107, [Class 79 (iii), Motor vehicles, Arrangement &c. of parts of], are referred to.
