Abstract
437,772. Control of D.C. motors; controllers. BRITISH THOMSON-HOUSTON CO., Ltd., Crown House, Aldwych, London. Dec. 20, 1934, No. 36569. Convention date, Dec. 22, 1933. [Class 38 (iii)] Varying E.M.F. ; regenerative braking. -A series traction motor M is controlled by a controller 15 which varies the voltage applied to the motor from a dvnamotor machine D subdividing the line voltage, means being provided including a lost motion connection 32 between the controller and its operating handle 30, for regeneratively braking the motor when the controller occupies any one of its positions. The motor circuit includes an auxiliary compound-wound generator 12 driven with the dynamotor whereby gradual transition from one step of voltage to the next is obtained. At the first position of the controller 15, the motor circuit includes only the auxiliary generator, but at succeeding steps the voltage of the generator is supplemented by increasing voltages from the dynamotor. Upon backward movement of the controller handle 30 from any position, the lost motion connection causes a switch 31 to connect the auxiliary generator 12 across the motor field 11, so that the motor is regeneratively braked.
