Abstract

204,633. British Thomson-Houston Co., Ltd., (General Electric Co.). Jan. 31, 1923. Systems for continuous-current motors only; electric braking.-In order to obtain smooth reversal of a motor-driving planing or other reciprocating machinery, an electric braking effect is applied to the motor after current is cut off and iscontinued until after the supply has been re-connected in the opposite, direction. In the anangement shown, the motor 10 is connected to forward and reverse contactor switches 12, 13 and is provided with two braking switches 21, 22. When the forward contactor 12 is opened, a coil 14 connected in shunt with the motor armature closes the switch 21 which puts the motor in a rheostatic braking circuit with a resistance 15. As the current in the braking circuit decreases with decreasing speed, a series lock-out coil closes the second braking switch 22 and holds it closed after the first braking switch has opened and until closure of the reversing contactor 13 has annulled the currentin the lock-out coil.
