[Class 7 (ii).] The velocity of a column of pulsating gas is rendered more uniform, and the noise therefrom reduced by disposing in the path of the gas a helicoidal rotor a of relatively high inertia. The rotor is mounted in bearings d and its inertia value may be increased by attaching a flywheel. Where the engine comprises a number of cylinders, the exhaust periods of which overlap, several silencers should be provided, each of which is connected with such a number of cylinders as to prevent overlapping.
