356,055. Driving-gear for tractor and trailer vehicles. FIAT SOC. ANON., 250, Via Nizza, Turin, Italy. Dec. 10, 1930, No. 37298. Convention date, Dec. 10, 1929. [Classes 79 (ii) and 79 (iii).] A tractor and trailer combination is provided with means for driving one or more pairs of trailer wheels from the tractor characterized in that immediately to the rear of the tractor change-speed gear box 2 and connected thereto is a second gear box 2 which is driven by the main shaft of the first gear box and which drives two shafts, one driving the tractor axle and the other driving one or more of the trailer axles. In the construction shown the second gear box 3 contains a driving pinion a and two larger driven wheels b, c fixed on shafts 4, 5 which drive the tractor and trailer respectively. The shaft 5 rotates at its rear end in a bearing 9 carried by a frame member 8 and is connected to the trailer driving-shaft 38 by a sliding joint 30, universal joints 28, 26, a stub shaft 18 rotating in bearings 22 carried by the trailer frame 12, a universal joint 36 and a sliding joint 38a. The double universal joint 26, 28 is housed in a ball-and-socket joint connecting the tractor and trailer, this joint being formed by a ball 8a fixed to the tractor frame member 8 and a two-part socket 10, 10a fixed to the trailer frame 12. The sliding joint 30 permits the ready removal and recoupling of the trailer shaft when the trailer is to be detached or replaced.
