Abstract
Paraffin wax or a vegetable or mineral wax is added to oil paints or varnishes in the form of colloidal aqueous emulsion. The emulsion may be prepared by dissolving the wax in xylene and emulsifying it with water and an emulsifying agent such as sodium oleate in a high-speed machine. In examples, the emulsion is added to a varnish formed of bitumen, linseed oil, and benzene, and to a red-lead linseed oil varnish paint.
