Abstract
Aqueous emulsions of waxes such as paraffin wax employed for coating or impregnating purposes are prepared by emulsifying the wax by agitation in water in the presence of a quantity of a volatile solvent, insufficient to dissolve the wax but not less than 25 per cent thereof, and of an emulsifier, such as soap, in quantity insufficient of itself to produce a stable emulsion. Suitable solvents are benzene, benzine, xylene, turpentine. Examples of the invention are as follows: (1) 25 gms. of paraffin wax, melted in the presence of 50 gms. of heavy benzine at 50 DEG C., are dispersed in 100 gms. of warm water containing 1 gm. of sodium oleate. (2) 100 parts each of paraffin wax and petroleum, melted together at 50 DEG C. are dispersed in water containing 5 parts of 30 per cent potash soap.
