Abstract

Paints or inks in the form of water-in-oil emulsions are prepared by adding to a mixture of a pigment and a vehicle consisting of gums, such as ester gum, resins, rosin, &c., together, if desired with drying oils, dissolved in naphtha, water and mahogany sulphuric acid or sulphonate, which effects the emulsification and increases the dispersion of the pigment. The sulphonic acids are those extracted by aqueous alcohol from mineral oil after treatment with strong or fuming sulphuric acid. The acids may be freed from entrained oil by distillation or extraction with alcoholic solvents.
