Water paints are manufactured by adding drying oils, oil varnishes, lacquers, or solutions of resin, paraffin wax, coal-tar, wood tar, &c. to a suitable aqueous solution of emulsifying-ingredients, such as starch, flour, casein, glue, gum, &c., and treating the mixture by homogenizing- machinery or the like until the oily material is uniformly distributed therethrough in such minutely divided condition that it does not segregate. The oil particles should be reduced in size to a less diameter than the pores of the wood, about 10 micrones or less, and may with advantage be reduced to 1 microne or less. Suitable organic or inorganic matter, such as pigments, may be added to the emulsion. Specifications 11028/03 and 114,886, [Class 140, Waterproof fabrics], are referred to.
