Abstract
354,073. Mules. LEES & CO., Ltd., A. and GUY, W., Soho Iron Works, Oldham, Lancashire. Aug. 22, 1930, No. 25106. [Class 120 (ii).] In a spinning mule a lost-motion mechanism is provided whereby at the beginning of the spinning operation the cop builder mechanism is held wholly or partly out of operation until a bunch of yarn has been wound at the base of the cop either without any progression, i.e. in superposed layers, or with a small progression, i.e. with the windings distributed over a limited range, after which the lostmotion mechanism is automatically put out of action and the cop builder motion brought into operation. In the second alternative the movement of the lost-motion mechanism is communicated to the builder screw to provide the progression of limited range for the bunch. The builder screw 5, Figs. 1 and 2, is provided as usual with the toothed builder wheel 6 operated by a pawl 8 on the lever 7. A wheel 10 having a toothed portion 12 of greater diameter than the wheel 6 and a plain portion 13 of less diameter than the wheel 6 is mounted freely on the spindle end of the screw 5 and is pressed against the wheel 6 by a spring 11. The pawl 8 is sufficiently wide to engage the teeth of both wheels 6, 10. When full cops have been doffed the pawl 8 is thrown back and the screw 5 reversed in the ordinary way. Owing to the pressure of the spring 11 the wheel 10 rotates with the screw 5 until a stop 14, adjustable in holes 15, engages a fixed stop. On its return to the operative position the pawl 8 then engages the teeth 12 and oscillation of the arm 7 causes the pawl 8 to rotate the wheel 10 idly on the spindle of the screw 5 while holding the pawl 8 away from the wheel 6, the yarn being wound as a bunch on the base of the spindle. When the pawl has passed the last tooth 12 it falls on to the wheel 6 and the ordinary build commences. In a modification, Figs. 3 and 4, a build of small range may be given to the bunch, a ratchet wheel 21 combined with a toothed wheel 16 being mounted freely on the builder-screw spindle and a toothed wheel 17, of greater diameter than the wheel 16, being fixed thereon. A compound carrier wheel 19 is mounted in gear with the wheels 16, 17. A pawl 18 on the arm 7 engages the ratchet wheel 21. As the arm 7 is rocked the pawl 8 rotates the wheel 10 idly and the pawl 18 turns the wheel 21 to drive the builder screw 5 slowly to build the bunch through the train 16, 19, 17. When the pawl 8 falls on to the wheel 6 the wheel 17 drives the wheel 16 at a faster speed the ratchet wheel 21 then overrunning the pawl 18. A reversing handle 9 and a brake-spring 20 stronger than the spring 11 are provided.
