Abstract

Aqueous dispersions or solutions of iodine are obtained by treating iodine in a suitably divided state with an aqueous solution of ammonia or like simpler amino body decomposed by halogens in the presence of water, such as hydroxylamine, under conditions in which oxidation can occur simultaneously with or subsequently to the reaction between the iodine and the nitrogen base. The reaction mixture is heated, and the concentration of the ammonia solution used is preferably between 0,5-3,5 or 4 per cent. Nitrogen iodide may also be mixed with distilled water, and gently warmed while oxygen is bubbled through the mixture.
