Abstract

351,170. Drying cellulose pulp, cloth, etc.; electric endosmose. COBLENS, G. E., 291, Broadway, New York, and MORRIS, A. W., 702, Morris Building, Philadelphia, both in U.S.A. May 6, 1930, No. 13913. [Class 34 (ii).] Cellulose pulp, cotton cloth, &c. P, is dried between two perforated plates or wire grids 1, 2 embedded in the material and heated bv electric currents which do not pass through the material. In Fig. 1 the heating currents are alternating currents received from a transformer 1<1>, 2<1>. In Fig. 2 the transformer also passes alternating current, from a secondary 3, through the material for the purpose of producing electric osmosis. In Fig. 3 (not shown), the current from the secondary 3 is rectified to produce a pulsating direct current, while in Fig. 4 (not shown), uniform direct current from a dynamo or batteries is passed through the material. The material is preferably held compressed by the plates during the drying process. Hot or cold air may be blown on the material from a nozzle or nozzles N. The plates are made of a material having a high resistance, such as nichrome.
