Abstract
390,680. Transverse smoothing-devices for webs. STOKES & SMITH CO., Summerdale, Philadelphia, U.S.A.-(Assignees. of Remington, J. P. ; 124, South Van Pelt Street, Philadelphia, U.S.A.) June 30, 1932, No. 18515. Convention date, Sept. 25, 1931. [Class 100 (i).] For stretching or removing creases &c. from yielding sheet material such as cloth being fed to ironing or other machines, such as printing or filling machines, without manual smoothing or stretching thereof, a blast or blasts of fluid such as air or steam is directed across the goods outwardly from their central portions and in a direction generally transverse to the direction of feed. The blasts act on portions of the goods which are free of restraint and are of sufficient strength to ripple or shake the cloth. As shown, air jets from nozzles 9, 15, 91, 151 act on opposite sides of the goods T, t placed on the feed band 3 of an ironing-machine, not shown, the jets being fed from headers 12, 121 and being adjustable in position to act on articles of different widths. Baffles 14, 14<1> prevent interference of adjacent jets. The air may be moistened or hot and dry and the steam may be more or less wet.
