Abstract
Esters of reduced indanthrones are developed in substance or on the fibre (when applied by dyeing or printing processes) by the use of ferrous salts in conjunction with ferric salts in the presence of acid. Mixtures of ferrous and ferric sulphates, ferrous and ferric chlorides, and ferrous sulphate and ferric chloride may be used, or the ferric salt may be replaced by an oxidizing agent, for example, a nitrite or persulphate, which oxidizes a portion of the ferrous salt to the ferric state. In examples, (1) wool dyed with the disulphuric ester obtained by treating indanthrone with pyridine-sulphur trioxide in the presence of a metal and a tertiary base is developed in a bath containing ferrous and ferric sulphates and sulphuric acid, (2) cotton cloth padded with the tetrasulphuric ester of leucoindanthrone is developed in a bath containing ferrous sulphate and sulphuric acid to which sodium nitrite has been added; sodium chloride or sulphate may also be added to prevent bleeding of the colour, and instead of adding sodium nitrite, ferric sulphate may be used in preparing the bath, (3) ferric chloride is used instead of ferric sulphate in the processes of the preceding examples.
