Abstract
348,411. Microscope condensers. POLLARD, A. F. C., Imperial College of Science & Technology, South Kensington, London. May 29, 1930, No. 16586. Drawings to Specification. [Class 97 (i).] A catoptric microscope condenser consists of a polished concave spherical reflecting surface placed below the object plane in such a position that the centre of curvature of the surface, or its optical equivalent having regard to the thickness of the glass slide, coincides with the object plane. For dry objective systems the condenser is preferably a hollow segment of a sphere of speculum metal &c. For use with homogeneous immersion systems the condenser takes the form of a solid spherical segment of glass, quartz, &c., silvered on its outer surface, the segment being less than a hemisphere. Illumination is effected by a vertical illuminator, an image of the light source being produced in the object plane by the objective, and the light being then reflected by the spherical condenser to form a second image, also in the object plane. This image illuminates the object by transmitted light which retraces its path through the objective and thus enables the full resolving power of the objective to be utilized.
