[Class 97 (i)] A magnifying-lens to be placed on the body to be examined has its refracting surface facing the observer in the form of a spherical segment less than a hemisphere and subtending an angle of approximately 140‹ at the centre of the sphere, the body to be examined being in the plane in which the intensity of the rays refracted by the spherical surface is a maximum. For glass of which the refractive index is 1À52, the medial thickness of the lens is greater than the radius of curvature of the spherical surface and not more than 1À5 times this radius. The base of the lens may be slightly concave to prevent scratching and may be provided with a scale.
