Abstract
257,127. Tully, B. J., and Rayner Optical Co., Ltd. Oct. 30, 1925. Refractometers.-A refractometer for the determination of the refractive index of precious stones, consists of a. hemisphere 1 of glass having a high refractive index and carried in a rotatable disc 2 in a casing 3 with its flat face horizontal. It is illuminated by light reflected from a mirror 9 and is viewed by an eye-piece 23 through the optical system 16, 14, 15, 13, 7, so arranged that the optical path is of considerable length. To permit the use of hemispheres of different refractive index the prism 13 is adjustable about a pivot in the casing 3. The refractive index of a gem placed on the surface of the hemisphere is read off directly on the graduated disc 24 in the focal plane of the eye piece 23. The increased length of optical path improves the definition and enlarges the scale readings.
