Abstract
346,044. Permanent way. MAYO, C. R., 9, New Broad Street, London. Jan. 9, 1930, No. 905. [Class 104 (ii).] Steel-plate railway sleepers 1, Fig. 1, have a deep hollow Vee or multiple Vee section with inverted trough-shaped wings 2. The wings are flat on one or both sides, or curved on both sides, corners being produced by the rolled formation shown in Fig. 1. The plate may have a thickened rib 3 to form the apex. The edges of the wings may be beaded. To enable the sleeper to bend, part of the depth of the Vee may be removed, or the sleeper may be trough-shape between the rail seats. The sleeper may be inclined towards the centre and the ends may be closed in or fish-tailed. Fig. 19 shows a W-section sleeper with flats 32 provided to seat the rails or chairs. The rails mav be secured direct to the sleepers by lugs or clips or may be seated on a plate 6, Fig. 7, carrying clip devices or clamps 16 rocking on the plate and tightened by bolts 11. The plates 6 are bolted, riveted, or welded to the sleepers, and with W-sleepers they may be riveted to the centre fold and welded to the wings. The chairs may have a rib 23, Fig. 12, entering the hollow Vee, and have insulation 22 to follow the contour of the base. Chairs may be cast on to the sleepers by metal entering apertures in the wings 1, Fig. 15, or the sides of the Vee, Fig. 18.
