Sleepers, metal; chairs, securing to sleepers.- Metal sleepers with tamping and chair-securing holes have ribs or strengthening flanges in the neighbourhood of any holes. The tamping-holes 17, Fig. 5, may be plain or flanged at 18 and may have end tongues 19 bent down to engage the ballast. With lateral holes 20, 21, Fig. 7, a central rib 22 is provided, while ribs may extend from the holes to the sleeper ends. The upper surface may have ribs 23 at the chair seats. The ribs 23 may be replaced by the side flanges 28, Fig. 13, forming a trough sleeper. This sleeper may have deep side ribs 26 and a shallow centre rib 24, or a deep centre rib. Drainage holes may also be provided. The chairs 10, Fig. 1, have snugs 12 slotted at 16 to receive T-headed bolts 15.
