To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, MAnLoN W. WAM- namir, a citizen of the United States, residing at St. Louis, State of Missouri, have invefued a new and useful l'tailroad-Tie, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to an improved railway cross tie and the object thereof is to provide im'provedmeans to prevent lateral motion or walking of a tie in the ballast or road bed under the impact of heavy moving loads or trains.
A further object of the invention. isto provide a .metal sup 'iort for rails which will peri'nit their maintenance in a permanent position and .)reserve the proper alinement and gage of a track without the use of the spikes, nuts or. bolts, suitable fastening means being employed for secu ring the rails to the tie.
With the above and other olii'jects in view, which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention resides in the combination and arrangement of parts and in the details of construction, hereinafter described and claimed, it being uiulerstood that within the scope of what is claimed, changes in the precise embodiment or use of the invention shown can be made without departing from the spirit of the invention.

Figure 1 is a plan view partly in horizontal section, of one form ofmy improved metallic railroad cross tie and fastening means applied thereto;

Fig. 3 is a transverse sectional view taken on the line 3-3 of Fig. 1;
Fig. 4 is a fragmentary plan view Partly in horizontal section, of a modified form of cross tie; and
Fig. 5 is a transverse sectional view thereof.
Referring to the drawings in detail,in which corresponding reference characters designate like parts throughout the several views, my improved tie is constructed of metal of any desirable shape or cross section, but as illustrated, :is made of angle steel, preferably in the form of an I-beam 10 having top and bottom portions or flanges 11 and 12, disposed parallel to each other and in horizontal position. The top and bottom portions are connected by the web portion 13 which is vertically arranged, except that the same is corrugated in opposite directions in the form of a tortuous or sinuous curve extend .ing at opposite sides of the transverse center taken vertically of the beam. The opposite corrugations are designated at 14, thus not cniy reinforcing the tie with regard to its supporting strength, but also providing resistance to longitudinal motion or walking of the tie in the ballast. It will also be apparout that the tie will be of sufiicient stability to resist any lateral or vertical movement in the road bed or ballast of a railway track resulting from oscillation of moving loads or trains onv the rails supported by the ties, which creates oliijectionable dislocation of the track alinement and surface and this accomplished by extending the corrugations or shoulders, forming projections at opposite sides of the tie, resisting movement in the direction of the tie, by contact with the ballast.
For the purpose of securing the rails 15 in position, and in proper contact with the tie, a metal lug or clip, indicated at 16, welded or otherwise permanently placed on and secured to the upper side of the tie, as an integral. part, in such position to engage and retain the outer edge of the rail flange in such a manner as to afford proper contact with the tie and effectually prevent any outward movement of the rail, thereby insuring maintenance of gage, also retention against their spreading. At the inside thereof, there is provided an adjustable metal clip 17 in position to engage and retain the inner edge of the rail flange against movement and the outer edge of the rail flange in contact with. the fixed metal lug or clip 16 in such a mannor as to prevent the over turning of the rail and insure the maintenance of proper alinement and gage under the action of the rolling stock and notwithstanding the lateral movements or oscillations thereof.
The bearing of the lug 17 is serrated and registers with like serrations on the tie as indicated at 18 for the purpose of prevent ing any movement of the adjustable clip away from its hearings on the rail after the clip has been clamped in position. 'A portion of the upper face of the clip is constructed with an inclined serrated surface to receive a wedge 19 having a like serrated surface, the top of the wedge being smooth and lying parallel with the top of the tie so that when the same is driven to a bearing under the round yoke clamps 20 which are passed through the top portion of the tie, through the medium of slots therein, and through the base of the clip, their heads having a bearing on the under side of the top portion of the tie, a rigid bearing of the adjustable clip on the tie and rail will be maintained, and the clips maybe removed by turning the yokes and releasing the serrated bearing surface of the wedge, so as to permit the rails to bemoved or replaced with facility. Of course, it is to be understood that corresponding fastening means are emp'loyed'at each end of the tie, and under each rail of a track.
' In the form of the invention shown in Figs. 4 and 5 of the drawings, the beam is designated at 21 and is provided with upper and lowerportions 22 and 23, the web 24 being provided at opposite sides with integrally formed or welded projections 25. As
shown, the projections or wings 25, are of right angular formation and project out wardly in opposite directions and in alinement at opposite sides of the web 2%, so as to form resisting surfaces to prevent walking ofthe tie as heretofore specified.
Thus, it will appear that I have provided noveland eflicient means preventing longitiidinal motion or walking of a tie in ballast, in conjunction with means for securing the rail in position to the tie. The solid'outside clip will hold the outside of the flange of the rail so that the rail will be madeto conform with any alinement of the track occasioned by curvature, and that the adjustable clip may be readily applied and removed by any ordinary track laborer.
It will also appear that the contact surfaces provided will materially reduce longitudinal motion or walking of the ties in "the ballast'of a railroad tra'ckbed, and that these appliances taken together will permit marked improvement and reduce expense in maintenance of alinement and gage in railway tracks.
Having thus described the invention what I claim is:
1. in combination with a metallic tie having a lug formed integral therewith, and having a serrated upper portion, a rail fastening means comprising a removable clip having a serrated surface cooperating with the firstinentioned serrated surface, the said clip having a serrated upper surface, a wedge member extending transversely of the tie and having a serrated surface cooperating with the upper serrated surface of the remo able clip, and means extending through the tie and movable clip for securing the removable clip and wedge to the tie.
in combination with a metallic tie having a lug formed integral therewith and having a serrated upper portion, a rail fastener including a removable clip having a serrated surface cooperating with the serrated surface of the tie, said clip having an upper serrated surface, a wedge member extending transversely of the tie, and positioned'on the removable clip, clamping members extending through the tie and through the removable clip, said clamping menr bers having right angled ends adapted to overlie the clip and wedge member for securing the removable clip and wedge member to the tie.
