Abstract

Raw heavy spar, if desired, after separation of quartz, shale, &c., is calcined at a high temperature, as 800 DEG -1200 DEG C., whereby bitumen is burnt out, and is then treated with an acid, preferably hot hydrochloric acid, with or without the intervention of dry-cooling. This dry-cooling may be effected in shaking troughs indirectly cooled by water. The residue, after washing out most of the acid, may be treated with an alkali, preferably ammonia. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 (3) (a) comprises also this alkali treatment applied to other processes of refining heavy spar. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
