Abstract

344,494. Wood - working machines. YARWOOD, A. E., 42, Studley Road, Darnall, Sheffield. Dec. 4, 1929, No. 37114. [Class 145 (i).] A safety device for wood-working machinery such as spindle moulding machines, shaping machines, and circular saws, comprises a ring-like guard-carrying member b, a guard-plate e detachably and adjustably secured to a flattened extension of said member b, and a guard formed by a flap or leaf f hinged to the guard-plate e and having a serrated edge g for engaging the wood acted upon by rotating cutters h. The guard f is restrained from outward movement by a spring j secured at k to the guard-plate e and yields outwardly to the passage of wood thereunder. Tendency of the wood to be drawn back into the cutters is prevented by the said leaf coming in contact with a shoulder t on the guard-plate e, whereupon the serrated edge g digs into the wood and arrests its motion. An adjustable shoe o bears upon the work and is carried by a stem m passing through a lug n on the collar b, for the purpose of steadying the work. A further adjustable guard-plate s is provided on the side of the collar b opposite to that carrying the guard-plates e. For small work the shoe o may be replaced by a hinged stop similar to the hinged flap f.
