A guard for a band knife comprises a forked rod B which protrudes through holes C in the machine table just in front of the knife. The guard is acted upon by a spring to maintain its guarding position but is retractable on operation of a pedal through links H, G, F and a supporting rod A. When the work is being cut the weight thereof will hold the guard down, but after the cut is finished the guard will rise automatically unless the operator's foot is kept on the pedal.
