In a cloth-cutting machine having a knife reciprocable in a slot 2 in a pillar 1 and penetrating, when in its lowest position, in a slot 7 in a base-plate 6, the slot 2 is provided with metal linings 3<SP>1</SP>, 3<SP>11</SP> separated by a distance piece 3<SP>111</SP> to form a slot 4 in which the knife reciprocates, the linings extending through the base-plate to the lower edge of the slot 7. The linings are extended forwardly at 8<SP>1</SP>, 8<SP>11</SP> in the slot 7 to enclose the point of the knife, and the sides of the slot 4 are radiused at 9. The linings 8<SP>1</SP>, 8<SP>11</SP> are curved inwardly at their forward ends to contact each other. The base-plate is provided with curved extension plates 10 to 13 having rubber friction pads 14 to 18.
