Abstract

344,430. Artificial limbs. BLATCHFORD, C. W. D. and BLATCHFORD, W. A. D., 90, Clapham Road, Stockwell, London. Dec. 4, 1929, No. 37216. [Class 81 (ii).] An artificial limb is provided with a free-wheel clutch comprising a casing 5, rotatable on a shaft 1 and having one or more inclined arcuate or other inclined slots or recesses 7 in each of which a ball or roller 6 is pressed into contact with the shaft by a spring 8, a chain or the like 13 connected to the casing and to an operating lever, and spring means to maintain the casing in its normal position. The casing may be fitted with flanged side-plates and an anchorage piece 12 to which the chain is attached. Operation of the lever rotates the casing in the direction of the arrow 20 and the spring-pressed balls 6 frictionally hold the casing to the shaft 1 which rotates in the same direction. On rotating the casing 5 in the opposite direction the parts are declutched. The shaft 1 may be adapted to operate a cam or cams which operate spring-pressed bolts adapted to lock a forearm member in various positions relative to an upper arm member as described in Specification 344,429.
