Abstract

260,064. Hopkinson, E. C., White, F. W., and Jones, C. D. Aug. 11, 1925. Siren - type. - A turbine is constructed on the principle that if a pair of discs, one fixed and one rotatable, with holes arranged in a circle round their axes, are placed face to face with the holes partially overlapping, the movable disc will rotate to bring the holes into register when a fluid pressure is applied axially, and its momentum will carry it past this point until the holes again overlap, so that the fluid imparts a rotary movement to the disc. In Fig. 4, C is the fixed disc and A the movable one. When fluid pressure is applied in the direction of the arrow E the disc will rotate in the direction of the arrow F. If the holes Dare B overlap in the opposite direction, Fig. 5, the disc A will rotate in the opposite direction. The turbine comprises a rotor A in shafts H in a casing G, Fig. 7. The holes B in the rotor are countersunk and normally register with inlet holes N in a plate G'. The plate C with the holes D is mounted to rotate within limits on the axis H of the rotor in the exhaust side and exhaust holes 0 are made in the plate G<2>. By applying fluid pressure through the holes N, B, the rotor will be caused to rotate and the direction is determined by the disc C. When this disc is at one end of its limit the rotor moves in one direction and when thrown over to the other limit, the direction of rotation is reversed. The disc C has only half as many holes as the rotor and is provided with securing means for keeping it in the corect position.
