Abstract

293,270. Lion, M. jan. 5, 1928. Movable-abutment type; working-fluid supply. -In internal-combustion rotary engines with annular pistons moving intermittently, the non- coupled shaft is completely locked while the coupled shaft moves with gradually increasing or diminishing speed, the driven shaft moving uniformly. The pistons 3, Fig. 2, are mounted on a shaft 1 and the pistons 11 on an inner shaft 2, both shafts rotating on an inner extension 19 of the outer casing 21. The shafts are ported to register with ports 26 in the inner casing arranged at two levels and communicating with inlet pipes 23, 24 and exhaust pipes 25, 25a. Sparking plugs 54 are arranged in the outer casing. The shafts 1, 2 are geared to the shafts 72, 74, Fig. 3, carrying wheels with pins 77, 81. These pins engage upper and lower recesses 86, 89 on a plate 75 mounted on the driven shaft 76 in such a way that when one pin wheel is driving the plate 75, the other pin wheel is also driving the plate or is locked by the rim of the plate against movement in either direction. The recesses 86, 89 have sloping edges to provide the gradual variation in speed of the shafts 72, 74.
