[Class 69 (iii).] A sprinkler system of the kind in which a sprinkler head is arranged below the level of the ground and projected, therefrom by the pressure of the water is so arranged that the nozzle is closed in the retracted position and remains closed until fully projected when it is opened, but is again closed before being returned to the retracted position. AT-piece 2 mounted on a main 1 carries a tubular member 4, within which is slidably mounted a shouldered tubular member 8, a spring 14 being interposed between the shoulder 12 and an inturned flange 6 on the tube 4. Within the tube 8 is a rod 18 carrying at its upper end a valve 17 held against a seat 10 by a spring 21 slightly stronger than the spring 17. The spring 21 bears against an adjusting nut 20 on the rod 16 and an inturned shoulder in the tube 8. A helically grooved collar 19 centres the rod 18 and also gives a swirl to the water leaving the nozzle. In a modification the valve head is provided with a screwed slotted sleeve engaging the upper screwed end of the rod 18, the flange 14 is replaced by a centring pin, and the spring 21 engages a pin passing through the rod 18 which engages slots in the casing to prevent rotation. A strainer may be provided to prevent access of dirt &c. Specification 248,371, [Class 69 (iii), Spray-producers &c.], is referred to.
