My invention relates to improvements in spray gun nozzles for use in connection with a hose or pipe line, more particularly in spraying trees, plants, etc., with insecticide.
The principal object of the invention is to provide a spray gun assembly constructed and arranged to reduce to a minimum hydraulic friction therein and adapted for maximum flexibility, as regards control, to vary the density and velocity of the spray To the accomplishment of the above, and subordinate objects presently appearing, a preferred embodiment of my invention has been illustrated in the accompanying drawings, set forthin detail in the succeeding description and defined in the claims appended hereto.

Forwardly of the rear end portion 3, said barrel I forms a pressure storage chamber 5 therein and is provided with an inlet nipple B for the attachment of said barrel to a hose, or pipe line, not shown, as through the'medium of the usual coupling .1 threaded into the outer end of said nipple with a gasket 8 clamped between the same and an internal shoulder 9 in the nipple. The nipple 6 inclines forwardly to the barrel I for a purpose which will be apparent.
Detachably connected, as presently described, to the front end 2 of the barrel I to extend forwardly and axially therefrom is an elongated nozzle tube in slightly smaller in diameter than that of the chamber 5. The connection between the nozzle tube III and barrel I comprises an annular coupling II threaded onto the rear end of said tube and into said front end 2 of barrel I, said coupling II being of the sameinternal diameter assaid tube Ill. The coupling II also functions as a lamb nut to clamp a disk-like annulus I2 into the front 'end 2 of the barrel I against an internal shoulder I3 formed by the juncture of said end and barrel, said annulus being of suitable metal and forming a small valve seat I4 concentric to the chamber 5 and tube II), a resilient gasket I5 being interposed between said annulus I2 and coupling II. As will be readily seen, the annulus I2 is reversible so that either side thereof may form the seat I4 whereby a new seat may be readily provided in case one becomes worn.
The front end of the nozzle tube I0 has threaded therein a forwardly extending and tapering nozzle type spray head I6 provided with a reduced externally threaded front end I1. The head I6 is provided intermediate its ends with an internal transversely flat annular seat I8, and tapers internally to said seat, as at is, in the'rear thereof and also forwardly of said seat, as at 20, to a restricted outlet 2|. The tapered portion 20 has a particular function presently seen. An out-' wardly flaring spray deflector nipple 22 is threaded onto the end I! of the head I6 with a resiiient gasket 22'- interposed between the same and said end.
Extending through the barrel I, to within a short distance of the end- 2, is a valve control rod 23 having the rear end thereof extending rearwardly of said barrel and provided with a cylindrical, knurled hand grip 24 suitably fixed on said rod by a nut 25 and having within the rear end 3 of said barrel I a worm section 23' thereon turning in the threads 4, whereby said rod may, under rotation of said hand grip 24 in opposite directions, be fed forwardly and rearwardly. A packing gland 26 is threaded onto the rear end 3 of the barrel I with a gasket 21 and packing 28 therein for preventing leakage past said end.
Threaded part way onto the front end of the valve control rod 23 is a coupling sleeve 29 having an enlarged front valve end 30. Threaded into the front end of coupling sleeve 29 is the rear end of a spray-control rod 3|. Sleeved onto the control rod 3| against the front end of the valve end 30 of sleeve 29 is a resilient valve washer 32 adjustably clamped against said front end by means of a sleeve 33 threaded onto rod 3| and provided with a front nut terminal 34. The spray control rod 3| extends forwardly into nozzle tube I to'substantially the front end thereof and has slidably mounted thereon a spray-control member in the form of a longitudinally ribbed sleeve 35 slid'ably fitted in the nozzle tube In and having extending from the front end thereof a spray-control valve member 36. The valve member 38 comprises anintermediate, spirally grooved circular flange 31 fltting in the before described seat l8, slidably, a rcarwardly tapering neck 33 between said flange 31 and sleeve 35, and a forwardly tapering tip 33 fitting loosely in the tapered part or portion 20 of spray head IS. A coil spring 33 sleeved onto said rod 3| between the sleeve 35 and a cotter pin 40 in said rod urges the sleeve 35 forwardly on the rod and hence the flange 31 onto seat I8 and the tip 38 into the tapered portion 20 of spray head l6. Sliding movement of the sleeve 35 on the rod 3| is limited by a longitudinally extending slot 4| in said rod and a cotter pin 42 extending through said sleeve and slot.
As will now be seen, under manipulation of the hand grip 24, the valve-control rod 23 may be adjusted endwise in opposite directions to adjust the-valve washer 32 toward and from the seat It to control the volume of liquid entering the chamber 5 and passing to the spray head l6. By

The liquid passing between the ribs of sleeve is directed through the grooves of flange 31 whereby it is caused to swirl as it emerges through outlet 2|. By virtue of the described arrangement of the sleeve 33 on said rod 3|, the valve washer 32 may be backed off the seat It while the flange 31 and tip 33 are held by the spring 39 in the described position in the spray head l6, thereby providing for increase of volume and pressure to head I6 causing the spray to spread in a wide stream which may be varied at will. By backing off valve washer 32 from seat l4 until spray-control rod 3| picks up the sleeve 35, through the slot 4| and cotter pin 42, the flange 31 may be backed off of seat I! and the tip 38 withdrawn from the tapered part 20 of the head l6 thereby providing for creating a long narrow spray stream also variable at will. By turning the coupling 29, the rods 23 and 3| may be disconnected to disassemble the parts as will be clear. Also by adjusting the coupling 23 the rods 23, 3| may be adjusted endwise, relatively, to compensate for wear in valve washer 32, seat I4, gasket 22, and between flange 31 and seat II.
The foregoing will, it is believed, suflice to impart a clear understanding of my invention without further explanation.
Manifestly the invention, as described, is susceptible of modification without departing from the inventive concept and right is herein reserved to such modifications as fall within the scope of the subjoined claims.
What I claim is:
1. In. a spray gun, a tubular barrel having a ment under turning and providedwith a hand grip in the rear of said barrel for turning the same, a coupling sleeve threaded onto the front end of said rod for endwise movement therewith in the rear of said seat, a second rod threaded into said sleeve and extending into said nozzle tube for endwise movement with the secondmentioned rod, a valve washer fixed on the secand-mentioned rod for'engagement and disengagement with said seat under endwise movement of said rods, and a-spray control member on the front end of the second-mentioned rod extending into said head and adjustable under endwise movement of said rods to vary its position in said head, said rods being endwise adjustable relatively under turning of said coupling sleeve to vary the normal relation of said washer and spray-control member, said second-mentioned rod having a lost motion connection with said spray control member whereby under endwise movement of said rods said washer is first disengaged from said seat and said spray control member subsequently adjusted.
2. In a spray gun, a tubular barrel having a fluid inletnipple extending therefrom intermediate its -ends, an annular disk detachably mounted in the front end of said barrel and forming a reversible valveseat, a nozzle tube detachably secured at one end in said front end of said barrel and terminating at its opposite end in a conical spray head, a control rod threaded into the rear end of said barrel for endwise movement under turning and provided with a hand grip in the rear of said barrel for turning the same, a coupling sleeve threaded onto the front end of said rod for endwise movement therewith in the rear of said seat, a second rod threaded into said sleeve and extending into said nozzle tube for endwise movement with the first-mentioned rod, a valve washer flxed on the second mentioned rod for engagement and disengagement with said seat under endwise movement of said rods, and a spray control member on the frontend of the second-mentioned rod extending into said head and adjustable under endwise movement of said rods to vary its position in said head, said rods being endwise adjustable relatively under turn-- GUSTAF GUSTAFSON/
