343,600. Surface-apparatus for interchanging heat. WALLIS, R. P., Dunelm, Woodcote Valley Road, Purley, Surrey. Nov. 26, 1929, No. 36203. [Class 64 (iii).] In a heat exchanger or air preheater having tubes of elliptical or oval crosssection arranged in staggered order, the tubes are so spaced that the area of the path of the fluid outside the tubes is kept constant at all points of flow. For this purpose, the distance between two adjacent tubes T, T1 in consecutive vertical rows is about half the distance between two consecutive tubes T, T2 in the same rows. The tubes may also be spaced so as to give any desired relationship between the crosssectional areas inside and outside the tubes. Specification 277,247, [Class 64 (i), Heating liquids &c.], is referred to.
