743,375. Plate heat-exchangers. BABCOCK & WILCOX, Ltd. Sept. 16, 1953 [Sept. 17, 1952], No. 25587/53. Class 64(3). Relates to heat-exchangers e.g. air preheaters comprising an assembly of plates 1, 2 spaced apart to provide passages therebetween, a heating fluid e.g. hot gas, flowing through alternate passages and a fluid to be heated such as air, flowing through the remaining passages. According to the invention, the plate assembly is held together by ties 7 which together with members 8 disposed on opposite sides of the plate assembly comprise a plurality of bracing frames spaced apart along the length of the assembly, the members 8, which afford lateral support to the plates, being pre-stressed in a manner tending to counteract the stresses set up during operation of the heat exchanger. In the form shown the bracing frames 7, 8 are spaced along side frames comprising channel members 5, 6 disposed on opposite sides of the plate assembly, the side frames being interconnected by cross members 51, 61. The plates 1, 2 are spaced apart by distance pieces 3 in one set of passages and distance pieces 4 in the other set of passages such that the two fluids flow in cross flow through the plate assembly. The plates are connected in pairs as shown in Fig. 2.
