343,557. Moulding telephone receivers &c. STANDARD TELEPHONES & CABLES, Ltd., Columbia House, Aldwych, London.-(Assignees of Zelenka, J. J. ; 535, North Ashland Avenue, La Grange, Illinois, U.S.A.) Nov. 20, 1929, No. 35475. Convention date, Jan. 2. [Class 87 (ii).] Plastic compositions, e.g. phenol plastic, are pressed to form articles in moulds having recesses to form a fin at the greatest lateral dimension of the article, the fin being subsequently removed so that finishing operations may be confined to a small area. As applied to the manufacture of a telephone hand set, phenol plastic is moulded to form the handle 12, the receiver 17 and the transmitter 24 in separate parts. The mould is mounted in a holder 11 provided with passages 16 for the circulation of heating or cooling fluid. Similar passages are provided in the upper mould member 10. The meeting face of the mould parts 10, 12 is shaped to produce a rim 14 and a rib 19. After moulding in polished dies, while heated and then maintaining the pressure during the cooling operation, the article is removed in a highly polished condition. The rib 19 is then removed as by grinding, and owing to the location of the rib at the greatest lateral dimension of the article the grinding does not mar any of the finished surfaces.
