Abstract

343,171. Microphones. WILLANS, P. W., 7, Ormonde Mansions. Southampton Row, London, and MILLINGTON, G., Kittiflag, Ballards Way, South Croydon. Nov. 16, 1929, No. 35114. [Class 40 (iv).] A sound translating device such as a microphone, more particularly of the electrostatic type, comprising a vibrating body, such as a diaphragm, is formed with a sound passage adjacent to the front of the diaphragm which communicates with a cavity of large dimensions compared with those of the sound passage, also positioned in front of the diaphragm. As shown, a stop member d having a relatively small aperture c is provided in front of the diaphragm b so as to form an annular sound passage f which communicates with an internal annular cavity g in the body of the stop member. The aperture c is formed by the junction of inner and outer tapered passages e, a, the angle of taper of the inner passage being greater than that of the outer passage. The stop member d may be formed with a flange d<1> by which it is secured in position in the front diaphragm clamping ring h or alternatively the member d may be formed integral with the ring h.
