Abstract
343,128. Loud-speakers. THOMPSON, O. B., 43, Enmore Gardens, East Sheen, London. Nov. 9, 1929, No. 34273. [Class 40 (iv).] In a moving-coil loudspeaker the diaphragm comprises an inner conical portion d<1> united at its base to a reversed conical frustum d<11>, the concave space s between these elements being bridged by a number of tie members or thrust-pieces T which increase the rigidity of the diaphragm and also serve as a mounting for the coil or coils C, whereby the movements of the latter are transmitted to a large area of the diaphragm. In the construction shown in Fig. 2 only one frustum d<11> is employed and a single coil C, the diameter of which is preferably chosen so that the area of the diaphragm within the coil is equal to that outside the coil. More than one frustum or more than one coil may, however, be utilized, e.g. as shown in Fig. 3, where an additional frustum completes the diaphragm and two coils C<1>, C<11> are united with the tie members. Preferably the supporting points for the rim of the diaphragm lie in the same vertical plane as the centre of gravity of the complete structure so that there is no tendency for its axis to move out of an horizontal plane.
