Abstract

341,118. Yarn &c. winding- machines. UNIVERSAL WINDING CO., 95, South Street, Boston, U.S.A. -(Assignees of Parks, E. F. ; 82, Whitmarsh Street, Providence, Rhode Island, U.S.A.) Oct. 15, 1929, No. 31319. Convention date, Nov. 12, 1928. [Class 120 (ii).] In machines for winding cops, bobbins, bottle bobbins &c. of yarn, thread &c. for use in loom shuttles, for knitting-machines &c., the traverse mechanism is actuated by a cam 15 having a continuous helical cam surface comprising two portions of different pitch and of opposite hand thus producing closely wound turns x held in place by spaced turns x<1>. The cam 15 reciprocates a rod 45 in a guide 44, the rod being connected by an arm 53 to another rod 55 slidable in bearings 56, 57 and partly screw-threaded to engage a nut 69 and a feed-wheel 70 between the bifurcated ends of a yarn guide 60, which is slidable and pivoted on the rod 55. The cam 15 has a helical peripheral groove 75 extending the length of the traverse in two and a half turns, connected at both ends to another groove extending half a turn. The cam 15 is rotated by gears 16, 17 and the belt 22 from the winding spindle 5, which is rotated by a pulley 7 ; a clutch 8 operated by a handle 10 being fitted. The pulley 21 is held in contact with the belt 22 by a cord 24 carrying a weight 27, the casing &c. for the gears 16, 17 being pivoted about the cam shaft. The cam bowl 50 is of lenticular form to ensure its following the right course at the intersections of the helical grooves, is arcuate to conform with the bottom of the grooves, and pivots on a stud engaging a hole in a lug connected with a slide on the rod 45. The yarn guide 60, which has two button-like guiding members and may have a slitted slubcatcher 68, is progressively moved along its reciprocating support 55 by the feed-wheel 70. The nut 69 may be disengaged from the partial screw thread of the rod 55 and slid back to the starting position after a bobbin has been wound.
