Abstract
338,944. Siemens - Schuckertwerke Akt.-Ges. April 17, 1929, [Convention date]. Gases, treating electricallally. - In the electrical purification of gases using rectified alternating current, means are provided whereby the potential between each charging half-wave, which normally remains above that required to obtain the working discharge, is caused to fall below the discharge potential. These may consist of a suitable resistance placed in parallel with the fitter. For example, in the purification of carbon dioxide, using rectified alternating current of 60.000 volts potential, the potential required to produce the working discharge is about 30,000 volts. Hitherto on normal working, the potential of the pulsating direct current falls to about 45,000 volts. By inserting a resistance of 1,000,000 ohms in parallel with the electrodes of the filter, the potential between each charging half-wave is reduced to about 20,000 volts. Resistances independent of voltage, current-limiting devices and also resistances dependent upon voltage, such as silicon' containing resistances, discharge tubes with incandescent cathodes working below the saturation point, or discharge tubes with cold cathodes, may be used. The process is applicable to current obtained from single or multi-phase alternating current.
