Abstract
60. Johnson, J. Y., [Badische Anitin & Soda Fabrik]. Jan. 2. Gases &c., treating electrically.-Impurities such as dust, fog, &c. are separated from gases by passing them first through an electric field in which a brush discharge is taking place, and afterwards through a field in which there is no brush discharge taking place. In the form shown in Fig. 1, a brush discharge emanates from the points, sharp edges, &c. of the electrode A, and the gases afterwards pass through the field between the smooth electrode C and the electrode D. The fields may be arranged to alternate, for example the electrodes may be arranged as baffle-plates A, D, Fig. 2, the brush discharge taking place between the points, sharp edges of the plates A and the cylinder B, and the gases afterwards passing through the fields between the plates A, D in which no brush discharge is taking place. Or the electrodes A may alternate with short smooth cylindrical electrodes. The two sets of electrodes may be supplied from the same or a different source of electricity, but for the production of a field in which no brush discharge occurs, it is preferred to use a direct current, while the brush discharge is advantageously formed by an alternating current.
