Rotary machines.-A machine for printing fabrics &c. in multi-colour from intaglio printing- cylinders 14 is constructed to drive printing- cylinders 14 of different sizes by means of a change-speed gear from a shaft 10, and an intermediate gear 11 freely mounted concentrically to the main impression cylinder 12. The gear 11 engages gears 16 which engage gears 13 fixed to the cylinders 14, and the cylinder 12 is driven frictionally from the cylinders 14. The shaft 10 is fitted with a sliding gear which can engage either a gear 7 or a gear 6 fixed concentrically to a gear 5, and the gears 5, 7 are mounted in a frame 3 which is angularly adjustable by worm gearing 2 to bring either of the gears 5, 7 into engagement with the gear 11. The gears 16 are mounted in curved slots 22 in a sector-shaped frame 18 and sub-frame 25 which is adapted to act as a gear guard and prevent the catching of obstacles in the bite of the gears 11, 16. The frames 18, 25 are angularly adjustable about the shaft by means of screws 21, and are secured in adjusted position by bolts 20. The gears 16 are secured in the required position by means of washers 26, Fig. 6, held by dowels 33 to the frames 18, 25, and nuts 23<1> are finally screwed on the screwed ends of the spindles 23 on which the gears 16 are freely mounted. The cylinders 14 are adjustable by screws 24. Pivoted gear guards 30 are provided to protect the bites of the gears 13, 16. These are spring-mounted about horizontal pivots 32 which are substantially tangential to the pitch circles of the gears 16, the pivots 32 being carried by plates 31 swivelled on the spindles 23 and held in position by collars 26 and dowels 33. The guards 30 are provided with apertures 35 to allow of access to the ends of the spindles 23.
