Abstract

337,098. Hammatt, C. Aug. 16, 1929. Flexible tubes.- An extensible tube for conveying fluids comprises a flatsectioned coiled spring 1 and a rubber t u b e 2 disposed within same, the rubber tube having a diameter, when assembled, less than the normal internal diameter of the spring and the two being secured at their ends to ferrules 3 forming part of coupling unions, &c. Initially the rubber tube is of a length equal to that of the spring and has an external diameter equal to the internal diameter thereof, and it is extended during assembly when each of its ends is expanded within the ferrules 3 by hollow bushes 6 inserted therein and the ends of the spring are threaded into the ends of the ferrules. The bushes 6 may be split and expanded in the rubber tube, while the tube may also be cemented in the ferrules. The rubber tube may be lined with canvas and the spring treated to preserve it against corrosion.
