Abstract
332,773. Sandison, A. G. S. Aug. 12, 1929. Regulation, automatic. - A liquid rheostat comprises a vessel having an insulating partition having a tapering passage therethrough and a conical insulating member corresponding in shape to the passage and moving therein. In the arrangement shown the partition 2 is formed with a conical portion 10 and the conical insulating member 12 is carried on a sliding rod 11. The surface of the member 10 is grooved as shown to prevent sticking. Contact is made with the resistance liquid 3 through terminals 5, 6 and mercury 7, 8. The rod 11 may carry the armature of a solenoid and move against the action of a spring. By connecting the solenoid suitably in a circuit the device may be made to regulate the current or voltage in a circuit.
