Powdered and granular resistances. - An electric regulating-resistance of the type in which powdered or granular conducting- material is used, comprises a tube of inverted U, V, or like form provided with sliding electrodes in one or both of the inverted arms to support the granular or like conducting! material such as graphite, powdered carborundum, or the like. The arms 2, 3 contain electrodes 4, 5 having their upper ends formed as pistons to support the granular or like conductor 6. On moving one or both electrodes, the crosssectional area of the conductor in the bend of the tube is varied, thereby varying its resistance. The position of electrode 4 may be varied by a rocking-lever 8 as shown, or a screw or other device can be used: both electrodes may be so moved if necessary.
