Abstract
332,082. Ayre, A. L., and Ayre, W. Aug. 7, 1929. Rudders.-A ship's rudder of the balanced or semi-balanced type has side surfaces which converge asymmetrically on both sides of a rudder axis to a leading edge offset with respect to the fore and aft axis, the edge being directed toward the propeller race stream and the sides converge symmetrically to the after edge which is disposed in the central plane of the rudder. The after portions of the side surfaces 5, 9, Fig. 1, converge! symmetrically to a tail 4 but forwardly the surfaces converge to a point 6 which is offset on opposite sides above and below the propeller axis. In an alternative form the offset side is continued on a straight surface 5b, Fig. 2. In a further alternative, Fig. 3, the after surfaces 11 are set with an angle alpha above and below the propeller axis in addition to the nose portion 10 being asymmetrical. The angle a may increase progressively from the propeller axis toward the top and, bottom or may be constant. Specifications 299,184 and 332,083 are referred to.
