Toothed gearing.- In gearing for coupling an exhaust-driven turbine to a reciprocating engine, or for other purposes, accurate meshing of the teeth independent of the flexure of the main shaft is secured by locating the bearings for the turbine-driven pinion in a casing which is centred on the main shaft of the reciprocating engine. As applied to a double-reduction gear, a casing C, Fig. 3, is centred in bearings D embracing a main shaft A. The casing contains bearings for the wheels F, K and G. The pinion G may be connected to the turbine by a long and flexible shaft, or a flexible coupling may be used. The weight of the gear-wheel B is taken by the external bearings of the engine, but the casing may be supported by a spring S. Rotation of the casing about the shaft A is prevented by coacting abutments M, N which may have flat or spherical surfaces concentric with the axis of the high-speed pinion G, with or without interposed rollers M', and which may be bolted together by bolts and spring or other suitable washers. In a simpler form applied to single reduction gearing, rotation is prevented by a link L, Fig. 1, below the axis of the pinion. The link may be resilient and may co-operate with a similar link above the axis. Lateral movement of the casing may be prevented by spring or other abutments, which may comprise collars on the main shaft, or foundation abutments. The teeth may be straight or helical.
