Abstract

582,622. Toothed gearing. BAUMANN, K., and METROPOLITAN-VICKERS ELECTRICAL CO., Ltd. Nov. 18, 1942, No. 16343. [Class 80 (i)] [Also in Group XXVI] The rotors of a contra-rotational turbine are connected together and to a power shaft by epicyclic gearing arranged so that, when the turbine is idling, the power shaft turns both rotors in the same direction. A simple gear is shown in Fig. 1 and other forms are described. The rotor shafts B, C carry external and internal gear teeth b, c engaged by the same pinion e1, mounted on an arm a fast on the power shaft A. The spindle E of the pinion e carries also a pinion e2 which engages teeth on a wheel F. The wheel F is mounted freely on the shaft A and is integral with a brake drum F1. When the drum F., is held by the brake band F2, the turbine rotors rotate oppositely and transmit power to the shaft A. When the turbine is to idle, the drum F, is freed and, as the shaft A rotates under other power, the turbine rotors are carried round in the same direction. A positive stop may be provided in addition to the brake band.
