Fluid-actuated valves; closure members, piston.-A sluice valve for semi - liquids or siltcarrying liquids of the type comprising a piston valve or gate F, Fig. 1, operated by hydraulic pressure admitted to the ends of a cylinder E, the gate F presenting an eye F<1> adapted, in the open position, to register with a straight-through passageway, is characterized by a controlling valve device settable to admit pressure to either end of the cylinder E, at the same time connecting the .other end to exhaust. The controlling device preferably takes the form of a four-way cock J, Fig. 4, connected by pipes H<3>, H<4> to both ends of the cylinder E, by pipe J<1> to the conduit E<3> on the inlet side E<1> of the valve or to an independent pressure supply, and by pipe J<2> to exhaust. Packing rings L<1>, K<1>, Fig. 1, are provided on the outlet side E<2> of the through passage and in the piston near its ends, respectively, the packing grooves having passages at M and K<2> respectively to admit pressure to the inner faces of the packing rings to ensure fluid tightness. A groove O in the piston F slidably engages a block P in the cylinder E and prevents rotation of the piston valve.
