Scavengers' carts having lids or doors which are normally closed are provided with springs or weights whereby the doors or lids are automatically opened when released to allow refuse &c. to be emptied into the cart. The doors a hinged to the top of the body and are provided with a weight c which causes the door to open when a lever d is raised to allow a notch d<2> to be disengaged from a bracket e. A notch d<3> engaging the bracket e holds the door in open position. Springs h in various positions and either in tension or compression may replace the weights c.
