Cores, yokes, and carcass structures.-In a multipolar continuous-current machine with a magnet frame having as many external straight sides as the machine has poles and the poles arranged in pairs with each side of each pole in any one pair parallel to a line joining the midpoint of that pair to the centre of the machine shaft, the metal of the magnet frame between the poles of each pair is thickened. By this arrangement, the magnetic leakage is reduced and the size and weight of the magnet system for a given output are reduced while leaving room for sufficient interpole copper. The pole pairs are so arranged that the mid-points of the pole arcs are separated by (360 ¸ pole number) degrees. The Figures show a space frame 4-pole machine with integral poles c. The yoke between the poles of the pairs is thickened at b by an amount in accordance with the desired ratio of reluctances in the vertical and horizontal sides of the machine. The frame at places other than the thickened regions b may be of uniform thickness or it may have a thickened belt, as shown by the dotted line d, Fig. 2, all round it between the thickened portions b, this belt d being flanked by thin portions d' and having the same axial length as that of the poles or armature core. The vertical height of,a fourpole frame may be different from its width and the poles may be of any section.
