Abstract
805,927. Core constructions; exciting dynamo-electric machines. GENERAL ELECTRIC CO. June 22, 1956 [June 22, 1955], No. 19429/56. Class 35. The two pairs of salient polepieces 14, 15 and 16, 17 of a dynamo-electric machine are of different length from, and have their axes perpendicular to, each other, the shorter polepieces 14, 15 carrying field windings 18, 19 which are series connected with the armature 10 and the longer polepieces 16, 17 carrying field windings 20, 21 which are either shunt connected with at least the armature or separately excited, the four windings providing the main field of the machine. As shown, a machine of low height for use in mines or for traction purposes has the short polepiece axis vertical and the required characteristic by the series and shunt or separately excited windings providing at the rated load 30 and 70 per cent respectively of the field excitation. Between each two adjacent main polepieces are commutation polepieces 23 . . . 26 each carrying a winding 28 serially connected with the rotatable armature 10. The main windings 18. . . 21 are connected through reversing switches 29, 30.
